Please note the forecasts for each of the constellations concluding this Star Trends column are done in the system of Indian astrology, called Vedic astrology, which uses the observable constellations. These are different than the signs. Even though the names of the constellations and the signs translate the same, they have different reference points in the heavens. You will notice the difference in the dates in this column compared to the typical Sun sign column used by Western astrology. These dates reflect the constellations, which Vedic astrologers use in their forecasts.
Every four years I turn my attention to the US presidential elections using the insights of Vedic astrology to forecast who will be the next US President. The candidates for President in 2016 are Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. These certainly are not my choices or the choices of many Americans, but as the saying goes - we have the best democracy that money can buy. Now let’s turn our attention to the astrological charts of the nominees.
We have a documented birth chart for the Republican candidate Donald Trump. He has a very powerful astrological chart, which is why he is the Republican standard bearer, irrespective of what the people think or say about him. Trump has the regal constellation of Leo rising and the ruler of this constellation is no less than the Sun himself. The Sun is most powerful when he is directly overhead and that is the case with Trump's Sun, as it is in the 10th domain of his chart where it is extremely powerful. The Sun in this place is said to be that of a King, or in today's parlance, the chart of a leader. When planets are placed along the vertical axis and horizontal axis of the chart they are placed in what are called the Angles. These are the power places of the chart. Five of Trump's planets, including the Sun and the Moon, are situated in these astrological Angles. This is a very powerful chart with so many angular planets.
Trump was born at a full Moon. However, the Moon under which he was born was a lunar eclipse. When the Sun and Moon are with the storm and shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu, they create a stormy, shadowy personality. Such is the case with Donald Trump, who is well known for his volatile disposition. The storm planet Rahu is very close to Trump's Sun, the ruler of his chart. Each of the planets in Vedic astrology has a caste, or a class to describe its function. Rahu is said to be an outcast, an artisan and non-conformist planet. Many artisans and actors have this position, as it is excellent placement for the theater and the performing arts. This Rahu influence on Trump's Sun describes him perfectly. He has skillfully manipulated the media to constantly keep himself in the public eye, albeit in a non-conformist ongoing theatrical display! However negatively people view Trump's behavior, we have to face the reality that this is the political polemic of the times in which we now live. Nice political guys and gals finish last.
It is the opinion of many that Trump skillfully manipulates the media to keep himself in the public eye. This follows the age-old adage that any publicity is good publicity. As a Rahu/Sun type, his theater act appeals to all those, within and without his designated political party, who regard him as an anti-establishment hero willing to buck the system. This persona has carried him to the forefront of the Republican Party. Rahu with his planet the Sun postures him as an interloper, an upstart, and this is exactly his appeal to the public venting against the status quo. This is all the more appealing and ironic since these voters have propelled him to be the top candidate of the status quo GOP! Even the ongoing controversy within his adopted party fuels his constituency as his supporters want him, even if the leadership of his party does not. This brilliant political theater has kept his name in the headlines. Like an oversized kite, soaring then diving in the sky, Trump constantly creates shock and awe for all to see with continued frequent viewings!
Furthermore, Mr. Trump has the power planet Mars rising on the horizon of his chart, in an Angle, in the regal constellation of Leo. This Mars has allowed him early on to project himself fearlessly into the political race, and gain the upper hand through constant attacks on the current competitor of the day. Mars believes that a good offense will overcome a good defense any day, and Trump subscribes to this age old philosophy. He also benefits because this has been the year where Mars has come close to the earth by transit. He has opportunistically utilized all the rage and hate that Mars at perigee can encourage to his political advantage, proclaiming that he is the strong leader that will attack America's enemies during these difficult times.
Astrology is about time, and the times in which we live. Time travels in cycles, very much like the seasons of greater and lesser light. Each person experiences the cycles of their planets and the actions that are associated with those cycles, for that is their Karma. Just like we can break down time into a year, a season, a month, and so forth. We astrologers typically break down the personal cycles of the planets into two cycles to describe a certain period of allotted time. Donald Trump is running the planetary cycle of Rahu, and as previously said, that planet is with Trump's planet, the Sun, at the very top of his chart. It is his time to be recognized as a controversial candidate for President, tapping into that deep groundswell in these controversial times. Both the Sun and Rahu are close together in an Angle and that makes these planets very powerful. On a secondary planetary cycle level, Trump is running the sub cycle of Mars. The planet Mars is also in an Angle on the horizon of his chart. As previously said, Mars' perigee this year has favored Mr. Trump's attack rhetoric, further serving his cause. He has cut, like a sharp knife, through all who have opposed him.
Astrologers always look to where the planetary time lords are currently in the heavens while we are running their planetary cycles. Trump's time Lord Rahu is transiting the constellation of Leo. Mars was close to the Earth for most of this year and until mid-September was in Scorpio. These two planets have been transiting the Angles of his chart, giving him further power and momentum. We can now understand why Mr. Trump has gained such driving force this year to bring him before the public as the Republican presidential candidate.
We have two birth times for Hillary Clinton, so there is controversy surrounding her chart. The Wall Street Journal wrote a recent article about this astrological controversy. Many astrologers use the morning chart, rather than the evening chart. The simple calculus is that the evening chart just does not have the power to provide Hillary with this presidential opportunity. Nor does it have the power to provide her with a dynamic spouse, the former two-term president Bill Clinton. So I will be using the morning chart for this forecast, as I believe this is the correct chart for Hillary Clinton.
Clinton is born with the constellation of Libra rising. Venus is Mrs. Clinton planet and is placed in its own constellation of Libra in the first Angle of the chart. This is strong placement for Hillary's planet. Like Trump, Clinton has no less than five planets in Angles creating a very powerful chart, which is why she is the designated candidate of her political party. Unlike Trump, Clinton's angular planets are decidedly across the horizon, rather than on the vertical axis of the chart. Furthermore, unlike Trump, two of these are naturally benefic planets, Venus and Mercury in Libra. Don't worry — the other planets are powerful malefic planets, just like Donald Trump’s planets. These powerful five planets in the Angles bestow great power and position to Clinton. Mrs. Clinton has Venus rising, whereas Mr. Trump has Mars rising. This is astrological poetry as Clinton is from Venus and Trump is from Mars!
The Sun in the chart represents our vitality and presence. Clinton's Sun is in the constellation of Libra, where the Sun is not as bright, as she is born after the autumnal equinox. This is where the Sun is said to be debilitated as the days are growing shorter. Planets gain strength when they are placed in the Angles and in combination with other strong planets, and this is the case with Clinton's Sun in Libra. Make no mistake, this candidate has presence and poise under fire, and is well seasoned and versed in politics. Her Venus in his own constellation gives the appearance of charm and grace, which alone does not make for a viable political contender. There must be some other driving, dynamic planets other than the Sun to bring Mrs. Clinton to be a presidential candidate.
Hillary Clinton has the natural malefic planets Mars and Saturn at the very top of her chart in the 10th Angle along the vertical axis. Mars/Saturn types are tireless work horses and very self-determined people. Just like the Sun, Mars likes the very top of the chart, and he is dominating in this elevated placement. Although Clinton's Mars is powerful by position, it is not as powerful by sign, for like Clinton's Sun, her Mars is debilitated. However like her Sun, Mars' weakness is cancelled due to the strong planets he is linked with. Mars in Cancer does not like confrontation, and to be in politics one must deal with confrontation daily. It is the nature of the beast. Mars gains strength through his relationship with Saturn, who is also in Cancer at the top of the chart. Saturn gains additional strength as he exchanges signs with the Moon who is the ruler of Cancer. These three planets form a very powerful planetary combination that we call Yogas in Vedic astrology. The most powerful of the Yogas is Raja Yoga, or royal unions that bestow wealth and power. In the ancient world you were born into a royal family and had their influence. In today's world you have access to wealth and influence. Clinton's Mars, Saturn and the Moon form such a royal union and this has brought her to the public stage for most of her professional life.
The Moon is ruler of profession and Mrs. Clinton's public persona. The power planets Mars and Saturn shape that persona along the lines of their strengths. Mars give the drive for power at the top of the chart. Saturn's strength is his perseverance and his self-denial. The strength of a person is not what they can do - but rather what they do without. Mrs. Clinton has suffered repeated public humiliation at the hands of the press in light of her husband's many alleged affairs. Yet, she has stood by her man, and has conducted herself with dignity and respect through this humbling process. The difficulties she has overcome have endeared her to her constituency, particularly the women voter base. She speaks to women as the first female presidential candidate, and she embodies the challenges that women encounter in today's halls of power.
The Moon's relationship with Saturn in Clinton's chart gives a carefully calculated public image of a woman in control of herself regardless of difficult circumstances. This is diametrically opposed to Trump's Moon, which is eclipsed, creating the persona of a volatile, stormy character. This calculated reserve of Clinton will continue to be seen in the upcoming debates. Mrs. Clinton has the ability to take whatever public scolding is dispensed. She has been there and done that many times before. Furthermore, Trump is in the unenviable position that when bashing Mrs. Clinton he appears to be misogynistic, so he must be very careful that his Mars does not get out of control in these debates. Frankly most of the time it does!
Although Mrs. Clinton's Mars is not as strong as Trump's Mars, she will have the upper hand in any debate in her retorts to his attacks. She will be defending herself with dignity, which of course is the carefully calculated image she wants the public to see. This skillful strategy has served her, and will continue to serve her right up to the election. This brilliantly nullifies Trump's trump cards — his powerful Mars and Rahu. There are no sensational positive media headlines that will serve Trump when a woman fends off a volatile attack by a man in any circumstances. Sadly it happens every day.
Hillary Clinton is running the cycle of the Sun. Her Sun is in an Angle on the horizon of her chart. This powerful time and placement is why she is a presidential candidate. She is running the secondary planetary cycle of Rahu. This is fitting, for we all understand that presidential elections are basically grand, political theater. Rascally Rahu is not placed in a powerful Angle, like in the chart of Donald Trump. The shadow planet Rahu is in a background position in the eight part of Clinton's chart. This domain has to do with financial and banking concerns. This suggests that Mrs. Clinton is backed by big money wishing to stay in the shadows and background during this election. Additionally, the material wealth that Rahu represents will continue to be a factor in all US presidential elections, for most of us realize you have to pay to play to run for office. This is precisely why both candidates are running a Rahu primary and secondary cycle. This fact will not change until Citizens United is overturned and financial reform comes to campaign contributions. I for one am not holding my breath for this to happen in US politics any time soon.
As said, we astrologers look to where the planetary time lords are transiting when we are running their cycles. The Sun will be transiting Mrs. Clinton's chart right where it was when she was born, as the November elections are close to her birthday. The Sun transiting the Angle where it was when she was born is a very powerful combination. Rahu by transit has been and will continue transiting the constellation of Leo in the 11th part of her chart, as he has done all this year. The 11th part of the chart is associated with our ambition and fame. This position is said to be Rahu's most powerful transit. All of this points to a very powerful time for Mrs. Clinton, which is why she is the presidential nominee for the Democrats.
As we can see, both candidates have very powerful charts, and they are running the cycles of planets that are powerfully placed in Angles. We must realize that while these candidates may not be our ideal choice, nevertheless these are the principle choices in a two party monopoly. Yes, there are other independent candidates to choose from, but the nature of the two party system assures they will never be elected. Thus, it is either Trump or Clinton.
As we come up to the election in November, Donald Trump's planetary time lords are strong. Rahu is Angular and Mars has entered his most powerful constellation of Capricorn come November. However, Mr. Trump's planetary period of Rahu is fading out and he is literally in the final days of this cycle. The long season of Rahu ends for him in mid-November of 2016. His next planetary cycle, Jupiter, is not in an Angle in his natal chart. He has run the cycle of one of his most powerful planets for almost two decades right up to the November election. The times are changing for him, and not in the direction of one of his powerful angular planets.
As we come to the election in November Hillary Clinton's planetary time Lords are strong. The Sun is Angular and Rahu is in the domain of the chart which brings fame and recognition. Her cycle of the Sun started in February of 2015 and will not end until 2021. The Sun's cycle is well under way, not soon ending. Mrs. Clinton's previous cycle before the Sun was that of her planet Venus, which is also Angular. Like Trump, this powerful cycle was approximately two decades in length bringing her before the public.
In conclusion, the cycle of the angular Sun will continue for Mrs. Clinton for several more years, while the cycle of Mr. Trump's angular Rahu is fading fast, only running several more days after the November elections. These are both very powerful charts. But one chart's angular time is now, and the other chart's angular time is rapidly leaving. The change of seasons at the autumnal equinox reminds us the bloom fades, and the leaves fall from the trees, heralding that the time of upward growth is over.
My Star Trends forecast is for Hillary Clinton as the first woman President of the United States. Her time is truly NOW and the National Organization of Women (NOW) will celebrate with her in jubilation. Donald Trump's planetary season is over in November, and it does not have the momentum to give him the Presidency. Do not worry about Donald Trump, as Jupiter's cycle will be for continuing wealth and outspokenness. His star will rise in another area of his life. Do not be surprised when he develops a dynamic media consortium to continue his populist views!
For those born under the constellation of Aries, April 14 – May 14th, or who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors personal relationship. Feelings of fatigue and financial challenge alleviate as your planet Mars moves away from Saturn in Scorpio. Look for new opportunities at work to reinvigorate the enthusiasm and leadership for which you are known. Jupiter in Virgo continues to be of great assistance in restoring good healthy habits. Perhaps start a new diet or exercise, and work is favored as he stays in this position for one year. In November your creative energy and enthusiasm continue to grow as your planet Mars comes to his most powerful place of exaltation in Capricorn, the domain of vocation - but alas exchanged with Saturn. Don’t look for recognition right away for the good work you have done. This will come later. Midway through December your planet Mars gets caught up with the storm planets Rahu and Ketu, and once again exchanges with Saturn to thwart your ambitions to conclude one tough year. Time off for the holidays is in order for Aries.
For those born under the constellation of Taurus, May 15th – June 14th, or who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors education and progeny. A sense of optimism will return to Taurus as time is spent with family, children and friends. November continues to feature many vocational responsibilities. These can weigh down the Bull's indefatigable spirit as your planet Venus falls under Saturn’s aspect this month. The storm planets Rahu and Ketu continue to bring changes and surprises at work. It's all good — go with the flow for best results. In December Venus falls under the aspect of Jupiter until the final days of the year, which bring relief. This is a great month for travel and education until Mercury goes retro on the 19th. Be careful not to overspend with Mercury retrograde as his exchange with Jupiter during the holiday season is ripe for overspending. Again, others may seek you out for the stability and reliability for which you are famous; but you can only provide that if all is well with home and family. Like Aries, time off for the holidays is in order to rejuvenate and renew your spirit.
For those born under the constellation of Gemini, June 15th – July 15th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October brings a sense where at last you feel to be settled down on a firmer foundation, with the potential of advancement in profession. If you have remodeled your current home or apartment it is time to have friends and over for a visit! Relationships suffer as Mars comes into the domain of partnership this month. November features "kiss and make up" as Venus enters the domain of relationship while Mars departs. Focus on your routines and health – don’t overdo it by creating fitness and health challenges, just as you feel you have arrived. Your planet Mercury's alignment with Saturn this month favors rest. The start of December brings romance and felicity as all the benefic planets light up the powerful Angles of your chart. Mercury exchanges with Jupiter for the rest of the month and this favors education, love and above all happiness for December. You will love this month! Wait to travel until after Mercury Rx on the 19th for the holidays. You will be glad you did!
For those born under the constellation of Cancer, July 16th – August 16th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors time spent with siblings and friends. Education and travel are favored with Jupiter in Virgo. Budgetary concerns regarding finances and family continue for Cancer, so do not spend indiscriminately — only prudently. October favors health and exercise for the Crab. This is the month to start that new diet or join a local yoga studio. In November Mars enters the domain of relationship and partnership so if you are feeling underappreciated or doing all the heavy lifting, now is the time to speak up before you become angry and resentful. Mars' relationship with Saturn in both November and December create delays and challenges at work, so you will need some extra-curricular activity to sublimate all that frustration. In December Venus enters the domain of relationship with Mars and a new romance might be just what the frustration Doctor ordered. So as said, time to get into shape! If not, enjoy the holiday — on a budget — with loved ones and family.
For those born under the constellation of Leo, August 17th – September 16th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors financial gain with Jupiter and Mercury in Virgo. Jupiter's yearlong transit of Virgo is good for finances, which is good for happiness, for as the saying goes, "no money, no honey." In November Mars enters the domain of health in planetary exchange with Saturn. This is the month to start a long term health and exercise program to help the Lion overcome the stress and responsibilities of this year. No quick fixes here, but rather apply a step by step program to restore health and vitality. The Lion, like all of the fixed constellations, has been under great pressure from the natural malefic planets in the important domains of life from which we draw our sense of stability. December features Mars moving into the domain of relationship and partnership with the storm planets Rahu and Ketu. This portends a stressful time for the holidays with loved ones. Perhaps it is best to stay home and not travel for the holidays, particularly with Mercury Rx on the 19th.
For those born under the constellation of Virgo, September 17th – October 16th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors increases in your self-esteem and recognition for your accomplishments as Jupiter transits Virgo for the coming year. Saturn's transit and the storm planets Rahu and Ketu have exhausted Virgos this past year; so please make sure to get your well-deserved rest to remain vital and optimistic. In November Mars' influence can cause stress and anxiety if you set too many goals for yourself. Relax, you have nothing to prove to anyone, yourself included. Venus this month favors time at home, not travel — unless absolutely necessary. Like Gemini, December starts with all benefic planets in the Angles favoring a wonderful month. Your planet Mercury, exchanging with Jupiter, offers the potential of a new romance, or a more serious turn with your current partner. Be alert this month for that special someone as sparks can fly. Enjoy the bustle of the busiest shopping season of the year, however please don’t shop until you drop!
For those born under the constellation of Libra October 17th – November 15th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors travel to foreign countries, spiritual studies and retreats with Jupiter in Virgo. The first half of the month your planet Venus will be in Libra, favoring social activities with connectivity with others. Mars' position this month takes the stress out of relationships so use this month to make up for lost time. November starts with Mars and Saturn exchanged creating delays. Budgetary and finances are first and foremost on the agenda for Librans, as money remains tight. As the month of November starts Librans should realize this has been a tumultuous time for life goals and friendships. Although difficult, you should have achieved the ones that were most important. Friendships in which you feel you do all the work, should be put on ice this holiday season. In December, the planetary exchange of Mercury and Jupiter favors education and social activities with spiritually oriented people. What better place to make the new friends you desire.
For those born under the constellation of Scorpio, November 16th – December 15th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors your friends and ambitions. With Jupiter in Virgo you need to collaborate with others to reach your goals. Mars has momentarily escaped the grasp of Saturn so now is the time to move full speed ahead! Like the Bull and the Lion, Scorpions have suffered as Saturn and the storm planets in Angles have created fatigue and isolation. Jupiter's year-long transit will end those feelings of going it alone. November features your planet Mars coming to his most powerful placement for 2016. Although he will be exchanged with Saturn, he will fall under the aspect of Jupiter to help continue that forward momentum you now can achieve. In December Jupiter and Mercury's exchange will help finances and a potential raise in pay. The later part of December features frustrations with home and family as your planet Mars aligns with the storm planets. Don't overschedule for the holidays with Mercury Rx on the 19th and you will be fine.
For those born under the constellation of Sagittarius, December 16th – January 13th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October opens with a focus on your career and finances as Jupiter in Virgo shines a positive light on these areas. Your planet Jupiter will remain in the domain of career until the fall of 2017 with favorable results. Further, Mars will be in your sign the whole month of October to help you get your motor running onward and upward. Don't burn the candle at both ends during November. If you miss your rest your work may suffer, and you will not be able to make it up during the busy holiday season. Even though there will be fabulous holiday deals this month watch impulse spending as Mars transits the domains of your finances. You will regret it when the bills come due in January. Jupiter and Mercury's exchange in December will have a revitalizing effect on you. This favors recognition at work and also recognition in love and romance. Perhaps a new relationship is on the horizon? Wait until Mercury’s retro period is over before jumping in with both feet!
For those born under the constellation of Capricorn, January 14th – February 12th, or those of you who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors education and travel since Jupiter in Virgo will highlight these areas of your life for one year. Educational choices made now may help vocational advancement in the future. November will feature Mars' moving into your constellation of Capricorn and exchanging with Saturn. Be cautious and your usual well-prepared self this month. This planetary combination is vexing and troublesome, but can be progressive. Although you can, you need not go it alone. Embrace alliances and friendships to help you reach your goals. Mercury will align with your planet Saturn in Scorpio this month to help lighten the mood for the holidays. Early December starts with Mars and Venus in Capricorn favoring romance for the Goat this month. Mercury and Jupiter’s exchange favor travel for the holidays, with the usual proviso for Mercury Rx on the 19th. Leave your credit cards at home for the holidays as Mars ignites holiday impulse spending for Capricorn!
For those born under the constellation of Aquarius, February 14th – March 13th, or those of you who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October favors rest and rejuvenation with Jupiter in Virgo. Make it a point to balance your home life with your work life, and you will feel the difference in your energy. As said last month, the Mars/Saturn alignment has been focused in the part of your chart associated with work and vocation. The going has been slow and exhausting for Aquarius this year. Now if the time to meet with a financial advisor and come up with a long term plan, as Jupiter now favors such endeavors. November is restless and Saturn as Mars again exchange. Stay positive and don’t sweat the small stuff, or let it irritate you. Venus favors time with friends to help you decompress this month. The Mercury and Jupiter exchange in December can help you reach your goals just in time for the holidays. Later in December Mars will enter your constellation and align with the storm planets just in time for the new year. Best be prepared for potential changes in your plans for the holidays.
Those born under the constellation of Pisces, March 14th – April 13th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of October features your planet Jupiter shining his potent light on partnership and romance. This could be your time for a significant relationship as Jupiter only comes to this placement every 12 years! Mars will be in the domain of vocation this month and this is a positive influence for Pisces. November starts with Mars and Saturn exchanged, creating delays and challenges in travel and education. Your persistence will see things successfully concluded. December features the Mercury and Jupiter exchange which favors both vocation and romantic endeavors. You might actually meet a romantic partner through work, or at the holiday seasonal party! December is so positive for employment that you might even seek out another job this holiday season, so forget foreign travel this month for you may be interviewing. Later in the month Mars will align with the storm planets in the domain of your health and hygiene. No junk food for Pisces for the holidays!

As June 2016 ends, volatility again returns to world economic markets as forecasted in this April's Star Trends newsletter.
This pattern (the Jupiter/Rahu alignment) will return by mid–June, so be prepared for another round of economic volatility.
Thankfully Jupiter and Rahu will only remain together until August 11th, when Jupiter moves into Virgo. As mentioned in previous Star Trends columns, this planetary combination has been fueling larger and larger megamergers the latest example is the corporate union of Bayer and Monsanto. This proposed deal is attracting a great amount of public scrutiny because of the enormous power it would place in the hands of Bayer/Monsanto. We can only hope that careful scrutiny of this absurd megamerger will temporarily end the "merger mania" gripping Wall Street in recent years. This time around the market volatility was blamed on Brexit, the British referendum to exit from the European Union. We must ask ourselves, what lies at the root of our present global uncertainty, where world markets turn suddenly on unpredictable events. Does it have to do with the continuous media onslaught fueled by society's fix for non-stop information?
In answering that question I will invoke the works and words of Alvin Toffler, who passed last week at the age of 87. Toffler was a well-known Futurist whose best-selling book Future Shock first appeared in 1970. It was followed by the publication of The Third Wave in 1980, then Powershift in 1990, completing his trilogy. As a social scientist, Toffler hypothesized an emerging triad of science, communications and capital was synergistically creating a rapidly changing society, without a known precedent or historical reference point. Mr. Toffler coined the term "information overload," describing the explosion/deluge of information that the digital communications revolution provided. The roaring "current of change" he proclaimed was overwhelming — personally, socially, and institutionally — creating what he called "confusional breakdown."
His prescient warnings about the consequences of this roaring change were extremely insightful. Toffler accurately predicted the development of the internet, personal computers, telecommuting, and even genetic cloning. He foresaw that governments, institutions and societies who failed to embrace the rapidly increasing rate of change would face a catastrophic demise, or worse — extinction. He was among the first wave of late 20th century thinkers to comprehend fully that knowledge would surpass labor and natural resources to become the most valued of all commodities.
Therefore, are we really surprised when sudden change — no matter what the source, quickly imparts "confusional breakdown" resulting in security anxiety for the masses? This resulting anxiety is really nothing more than the response to the sudden stress of change. Rapid change has been, and is now part of the everyday fabric of life's equations. And so — like it or not, we have to acknowledge and deal with this change and anxiety — even though we may not comprehend at first its immediate impact, trajectory or outcome. Toffler suggested it was more important to understand the general theme of sudden change than the specifics of change. He explained, "The rate of change has implications quite apart from, and sometimes more important than, the direction of change." His wife Heidi Toffler said it succinctly: "Change is the only constant." We all implicitly concede that fact — but not necessarily the stress which accompanies it.
We astrologers, like Toffler, are ancient map-makers. For as he eloquently expressed:
We who explore the future are like ancient map-makers, and it is in this spirit that the concept of future shock and the theory of the adaptive range are presented here — not as the final word, but as the first approximation of the new realities, filled with danger and promise, created by the accelerative thrust.
In the map that we astrologers use, the planet of accelerative thrust is Mars. When Mars is strong and close to the earth this accelerative thrust of change is suddenly visited upon us. That time is now. Toffler's book could well have been entitled "Future Anxiety" — for that is the consequence we all experience in the face of accelerated change. The remedy for this sudden volatility Mars creates is the constant of stability. We must possess stability to some degree to be able to embrace change without fear.
If Mars represents accelerated change, then his opposite and reconciling force is the planet Saturn, who represents our stability — the constants we trust implicitly. You must ask yourselves during these times of volatile and violent change, where is that constant in your lives? It is from that stable platform that Saturn represents, where you can face change fearlessly? During Mars’ close approach to the earth these next couple of months, I advise you to seek that stable platform — it will help you deal with and take the changes in stride. This is how you can mitigate the fear of "confusional breakdown" in the words of Toffler. We all have Saturn placed somewhere in the birth chart, and this summer is the time to embrace his slowness to counter the stress of the cult of speed.
The month of July 2016 will feature Mars' reentry into his own constellation of Scorpio on the 12th where he will remain until the second week of September. Mars usually transits a constellation in about six weeks. However, in his close approach to the earth, called perigee, he transits a given constellation for up to six months. This is exactly what he has been doing since the last week of February 2016. Mars will make this one hot year for the record books, as well as one hot year in the domains of life he influences. Global warming has already made 2016 the warmest year since records have been kept. This hot summer north of the equator will feature wild fires and record temperatures starting early — so be cautioned and get prepared for the heat — it will focus upon the domain of your life where Mars is transiting in your chart.
Mercury, the planet of commerce and communications, will align with both Jupiter and Venus in the constellation of Leo finishing out the month of July and into early August. This should bring a brief period of calm, understanding and good judgement in general. However, remember that Jupiter and Rahu are also in the constellation of Leo, and will remain so until the following month — so the jury is still out regarding prospects of stability.
The month of August 2016 features several important astrological events. On August 11th Jupiter leaves the constellation of Leo, ending his troubled planetary alignment with Rahu. Jupiter will enter the constellation of Virgo where he will remain until late 2017. The arrival of Juno, NASA's Jupiter space probe, to the Jovian gas giant last month commences an informative 20-month orbit of the planet. Juno will begin transmitting a wealth of new information to enrich our understanding of Jupiter; much like when Galileo first glimpsed the Jovian moons through his Jovian probe of a telescope in 1610 challenging the old Aristotelian model of the universe! The Juno probe will make 37 orbits of Jupiter's north and south poles, exponentially expanding our knowledge of this timeless beacon of light. Jupiter is considered of the Brahmin caste in Vedic astrology and favors advancement in in all forms of secular and sacred knowledge. As Jupiter will be transiting Virgo - Mercury's sign of technology — the marvel of modern technology will illuminate Jupiter for astrologers and astronomers alike throughout Juno's 20-month orbit.
Two days after Jupiter enters Virgo, Saturn will appear to stop in the heavens on August 13th and begin his forward motion in the constellation of Scorpio. When planets stop in the heavens they become extremely powerful. Saturn regaining his forward motion will bring a sense of caution as he comes to his final, exact alignment with Mars in Scorpio on the 24th of August. This period of time when Mars and Saturn are in close alignment portends to be exceedingly obstructive when our desired projects appear dead in Scorpio's deep waters. Be on guard — for if you are not vigilant, feelings of progress will seem to evaporate and be replaced with a sense of stalemate. Since Mars entered Scorpio last winter his perigee has fueled nationalistic, political and sectarian eruptions, threatening a reign of violence and terror. Hate crimes in all categories have soared during Mars' close run to the earth.
Mars by nature is not patient. At perigee he represents the dynamics of roaring change and accelerative thrust of which Toffler warned. His sharing of his sign placement with Saturn, which represents the slow rate of change we call stability, brings these antithetical principles into direct conflict. This explains why people feel deeply ambivalent and conflicted about embracing the rapidly emerging changes, or staying with the seeming secure establishment. Regardless of your sign, we will all feel better once this planetary alignment has played out, but not before. Remain cool and calm during Mars' hot summer, as he will not leave Scorpio until mid-September of 2016.
As Scorpio is a water constellation, the forecast is for a continuum of heated issues concerning our oceans, rivers and seas. This will include nationalistic and international water rights issues, and water pollution. Extreme flooding and drought will be thrust upon us, as will extreme storms of all kinds from weather to politics. Our consciousness can become overheated during the hot summer of 2016 if you do not take measures. Do not make important decisions during the heat of conflict this summer! Concerns that surface during the Mars/Saturn alignment in Scorpio will not be speedily or easily resolved. They will trend to continuing conflict, with much more work needing to be done for the foreseeable future. Pick your battles wisely during this time.
To add to the frustration in August, the first of three eclipses will take place on August 18th. Technically speaking this lunar eclipse is listed as an almost lunar eclipse, as the shadow of this eclipse cannot be seen from the earth. It is listed in some almanacs as a partial lunar eclipse and in others as an almost lunar eclipse. The liminality of this August full moon will only add to the uncertainty of the last couple of weeks in August, so go with the flow and keep in mind what Heidi Toffler said in "change being the only constant." Paradoxically, at the same time as these celestial agents of change and frustration accelerate in late August, all three of the benefic planets, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter will transit together in constellation of Virgo to counter balance the negativity of the malefic Mars/Saturn alignment. This month may be the proverbial best and worst of times. Go with the flow and see the good in late August. Don't double down on certainty, as August ends with Mercury retrograding on the 30th of the month! His consolation is that he will do it in the company of the brightest lights — Venus and Jupiter.
Frankly speaking, you do not have to let the content and agenda of the global media and their information outlets determine your reality during Mars' hot summer. What is important to them may not be to you. Late August is a wonderful time for a media break. Consider going on an information holiday during the Mercury retrograde. Enjoy the alignment of the benefic planets at the end of August in the domains of life that Virgo represents in your chart, rather than the darkened domains of malefic planets Mars and Saturn. The difference can be life affirming.
The month of September 2016 begins with a solar eclipse on the first day of the month. This partial solar eclipse will take place at 15 degrees of the constellation of Leo. It will be followed by a partial lunar eclipse on September 16th at 0 degrees of the constellation of Pisces. In addition, Mercury will be retrograde until he stations and moves forward on the 21st of September. That is a lot of celestial activity in a couple of weeks!
Months that feature eclipses trend to be more intensive, as the eclipses represent celestial storm patterns. These partial eclipses occur in Leo and Virgo. Please read the forecasts for those of you born under the fixed constellations of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, and the mutable constellations of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, as these eclipses fall in the angles of your charts. The angles of the chart represent the foundational domains of your life where you value stability — not accelerated change. During these celestial storm patterns the first half of the month, my suggestion is to watch and witness calmly the ensuing change, without being attached.
Although partial eclipses are not as powerful as total eclipses, the point to remember during eclipses is that something is being cast into shadow which can distort your perspective. As the saying goes — it will cast a shadow of a doubt. It is best during the shadows of early September not to make any impulsive decisions or start any long term projects during eclipses coupled with Mercury retrograde! You will be prepared to view events more clearly regarding what is stable and what is not, after the shadow of the eclipses has eased and Mercury stations and moves forward, which will be later after the 21st.
Finally, Mars leaves his constellation of Scorpio and Saturn's grasp as he enters the constellation of Sagittarius on the 17th of September. This transit will be bring a welcomed relief to the long term frustrations Mars has influenced since he entered Scorpio and Saturn's grasp on the 20th of February! The planetary heat wave caused by Mars will deescalate toward the end of September. This will bring a respite from all of the frustrating celestial weather that has characterized the summer of 2016.
For those born under the constellation of Aries, April 14th–May 14th, or who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors time with loved ones and family. Feelings of fatigue and financial challenge will permeate your endeavors due to the placement of Mars and Saturn. In August work challenges persist, but be doggedly determined and you will see them through. August favors creative endeavors and time spent with children and friends. Jupiter in Virgo will be of great assistance in restoring good healthy habits. Perhaps a new diet or exercise program will begin under his year-long transit. In September your creative energy bogs down early, during the first half of the month, so it’s not the best time to start new projects. September's early eclipse heralds changes at work and projects will take more time to complete than you seem to have. Ups and downs at work give anything but consistency. Don't be so hard and demanding on yourself this month. Feelings of liberation finally come at the end of September as your planet becomes free of Saturn and you star starts to rise again.
For those born under the constellation of Taurus, May 15th–June 14th, or who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors home investment, home improvements, and quality time spent with family. It is a wonderful time for a family vacation, particularly for you and your spouse. You both may have lacked the quality time together which foster those feelings of intimacy that is the foundation of all long lasting partnerships. August can feature many responsibilities which can weigh down your seeming indefatigable spirit. This is a good vacation month for you and family in celebration of your many accomplishments. Jupiter in Virgo will clear your mind and give you a renewed sense of creativity and rewards relationship with friends and children. September’s eclipses bring caution and concern to family affairs. Others may seek you out for the stability and reliability for which you are famous. But you can only provide that if all is well with home and family being on a firm foundation. If that is not the case, September is the month to change that.
For those born under the constellation of Gemini, June 15th–July 15th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, late July favors travel and educational endeavors with friends and siblings. The month of August will see Jupiter move into the domain of life of home and family. This may be a time when you move to a more desired location or decide to renovate or remodel your current home or apartment. There will be recognition and potential of career advancement as you sense that you are coming into a more stable time in light of the last few years. Enjoy the attention and popularity that the planets of light will bring — you deserve it. Take care to pace yourself for the whole summer, as you can overdo it and run into health difficulties in the fall if you neglect your self-care. September is full on with a distracting array of new activities, so don't let the surge in popularity get in the way of your self-care, diet and exercise programs. There are many changes ahead for you as you are coming into a time of growth and stability. Don't look back — the future is right around the corner. Believe!
For those born under the constellation of Cancer, July 16th–August 16th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors domestic happiness and culinary activities. Enroll in a cooking class, or have friends over for a non-GMO BBQ or dinner. Watch your summer budget though; in particular as you can spend everything you earned in this month alone. There is a tendency to brood, as your partner may be too busy or preoccupied to feel the closeness you feel you deserve. Be patient as the energy will open later. Late August favors time with siblings and friends and it will be easy to fill up your social calendar. Jupiter’s entry into Virgo favors local travel, so forget the hassles of long distant voyages. Hop into your bus, train or family vehicle and you will be at your favorite local resort in just a few hours to spend your treasured time relaxing — not stuck at the airport. Romance improves as well, so take that special person along. September brings a reexamination of your finances and your lifestyle. Yes, you can have it all, but on a budget — not on a credit card.
For those born under the constellation of Leo, August 17th–September 16th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors recognition for your personal accomplishment and achievements. You have worked exceedingly hard and deserve this — embrace it. Home life may appear stressful with many responsibilities that cannot be easily resolved. You may wish to move, or remodel or redecorate your home or apartment. But now is not the time as it will only add to your stress. You and your spouse have shared too many responsibilities so August favors a break from that burden. You may just want to catch your breath and stay at home with loved ones. Leo has been under great pressure in all the important domains of life from which we draw our sense of stability. The Lion has dealt with a time of roaring change. August favors some regular time off to restore the regal spirit of the Lion. September is a good time to embrace a new program of self-care complete with a new regimen and diet. You know the time is now. Stop procrastinating.
For those born under the constellation of Virgo, September 17th–October 16th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July will favor celebrations with friends and associates. The losses you have been grieving will give way to new friends and new social activities. Frustrations and feelings of lack of success will improve remarkably as Jupiter enters your constellation of Virgo in August. This portends a time of self-growth and self-knowledge, a return to your normal confident selves. Jupiter's transit is a sure fire remedy for increased feelings of self-worth, and there is nothing like a new romance or relationship to affirm those feelings. Difficulties in education and the development of new work skills will give way to a time of progress as the summer closes. It has been tough going for Virgo since 2015 with many trials and challenges regarding romance, so you may feel run-down and close to burn out. Virgo natives are sensitive, so make sure you get enough sleep to meet all the new connections Jupiter will provide in the coming year. Don’t look back to 2015 — look ahead!
For those born under the constellation of Libra October 17th–November 15th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors work and vocation. Friendships that have been strained and complicated will resolve or fall away making way for new friends and new social activities in late July and early August. Money remains tight so be careful and thrifty with your summer budget. Usually Librans are diplomatic in their speech but your frustrations have lately led to you speaking your mind, which brings a refreshing change to finally be able to speak your truth. In August Jupiter’s transit favors foreign travel, retreats and opportunities to get away from it all. Some functional escapism is in order for our responsible Libran natives. You will function so much better once your spirit has been restored. You may need more than one get-away in 2016 to balance the scales in your favor. September brings an assessment of your life goals and ambitions. This can be a progressive time to embrace a life coach in helping you review and affirm your goals for the rest of 2016.
For those born under the constellation of Scorpio, November 16th–December 15th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors educational endeavors and travel. There have been many changes at work the first half of the year, so some time off to travel will do you good. Mars and Saturn have been traveling together in Scorpio since late February, so Scorpio natives have been run down and exhausted. With Mars and Saturn in exact alignment later in August it is imperative that natives of this sign take some well-deserved time off to restore balance. Scorpions are steadfast and reliable, like rocks; however cracks are appearing on the surface that need to be addressed before they become deep fissures. Jupiter in Virgo in August portends a time of social engagements with new and old friends. From August onward you will no longer have the feeling you are going it alone. After the eclipses of early September the latter part of month brings liberation for your planet Mars, as he leaves his alignment with Saturn. Celebrate by making reservations for dinner!
For those born under the constellation of Sagittarius, December 16th–January 13th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, later in July favors travel and education. Even though the US dollar is strong, caution is advised traveling to foreign countries as Mars and Saturn have brought foreign terrorism into the 2016 spotlight. It is best to travel to safe destinations. Perhaps you have career ambitions that may require an advanced degree or additional certifications? In August, Jupiter in Virgo will favor those educational pursuits that will move your career forward. Career recognition and advancement are favored for Sagittarius from August on as Jupiter will shine his light on this placement for one year. The eclipses of September bring changes in travel. It is best to wait until month’s end to firm up plans. Later in September you will feel Mars' refreshing energy. He moves into your sign on the 17th providing the energy you have been lacking these last several months to move forward with enthusiasm. For you Mars will provide excitement as he revitalizes just in time for the autumnal equinox.
For those born under the constellation of Capricorn, January 14th–February 12th, or those of you who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors romance and relationship, but only if it has serious potential. Security oriented Capricorns will feel more stability in their financial portfolios as they seek less risky investments during these times of volatility. Jupiter's movement into Virgo, which is an earth sign, augers well for the earth sign Capricorn. August is good for travel and serious educational endeavors. Jupiter's placement is also good for business related travel and this placement in general is considered very favorable for Capricorn. Mars’ alignment with Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn has been vexing but progressive for natives of this sign. Alliances and friendships that have endured during this challenging time will bring the confidence that comes with tried and true friends, whose mettle has been tested in the heat of conflict. Capricorns admire and respect that quality in their friends. If you are counted as a friend, know that you have earned that during this difficult time.
For those born under the constellation of Aquarius, February 14th–March 13th, or those of you who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors all forms of rejuvenation and restoration. The Mars/Saturn alignment has been focused in the part of your chart associated with work and vocation, and the going has been slow and grueling this year. In August Jupiter’s movement into Virgo favors your longer term financial goals, so a change of financial strategy may be in order as the fall approaches. Like Capricorn, your planet Saturn has been caught up with Mars at perigee, which has been a bit of forced march for those under the lordship of Saturn. It has left precious little time for relationship, never mind romance. Exhaustion is not an aphrodisiac! Come August and the first half of September it is important to hurry up and slow things down to a manageable level. Saturn becomes free of Mars on the 17th of September, leaving the domain of vocation, where you should feel a growing sense of relief as the time ahead will indeed give greater consistency. You don’t have to work so hard.
Those born under the constellation of Pisces, March 14th–April 13th, or those who have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the month of July favors your creative juices starting to flow again. The Mars/Saturn alignment has challenged travel plans and educational endeavors, which should improve in the early fall. Your planet Jupiter, leaving his alignment with Rahu, indicates improvements in your health and outlook as he comes into the sign of Virgo from the 11th of September onward. Jupiter will enter the domain of your chart that influences relationship and marriage. This can herald a new romance or even a marriage proposal from a loved one! Your planet's alignment with Rahu until August has created ups and downs in the stability you crave. Jupiter’s placement in an angle for the remainder of 2016 will remedy that. After the eclipses and the Mercury Rx of September, the later part of the month features Mars coming to the very top of your chart. This is Mars' best placement and feelings of personal empowerment will return as you re-envision your life from this bird’s eye view.
Please note the following forecasts are done in the system of Indian astrology, called Vedic astrology, which uses the observable constellations. These are different than the signs. Even though the names of the constellations and signs are the same, they have different reference points in the heavens. You will notice the difference in the dates of the constellations compared to your typical Sun signs from the western astrology uses. These dates reflect the observable constellations, which Vedic astrologers use in their forecasts.
Now that the challenges of the March eclipses are behind us, April begins with Venus in the constellation of Pisces, where it is beneficently exalted. Venus' exaltation speaks to a time of renewed connectivity in the realm of relationships. This planetary placement lasts until the 24th of April, so please use Venus' time wisely in your lives. Venus in Pisces particularly augers well for those born under the dual constellations of Pisces March 14th - April 13th, and Virgo September 17th - October 16th, as well as Sagittarius December 16th - January 13th and lastly Gemini June 15th - July 15th.
If you were born under the aforesaid constellation of Pisces, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, during April Venus will be transiting the eastern horizon of your chart, which is representative of you! So this is a wonderful time for our Pisces natives to engage in self-enhancing behavior. Venus represents the natural aesthetic beauty of nature and the arts. Take a brief sabbatical to your favorite place of natural beauty. Visit a local art museum or attend a live performance of your favorite musical or artisan ensemble. To get that proverbial shot of self-esteem, go relax in a spa, enjoy a massage or facial. It will re-energize and revitalize you. When you feel good, the world feels good, and you are good to go.
For those born under the aforesaid constellation of Virgo or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Venus will be transiting the western horizon of your chart, representing your partners, relationships and marriage. It was probably too cold to do something lovely with loved ones this past Valentine's Day. Now that the spring thaw is upon us and the flowers are starting to bloom, do something special for that special person you love. Again, the emphasis is on personal enhancement and natural beauty. When the one you love is happy, you are happy. That is why I subscribe to the philosophy of "happy wife — happy life."
If you were born under the aforesaid constellation of Sagittarius, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Venus will be transiting the foundation of your chart, associated with your home and family. Do realize that when you live in an aesthetically pleasing and peaceful environment, it inspires you from the moment you wake up. Now is the time to start spring cleaning! Wash the windows in your home, vehicles, and glasses, for that matter, so you can see how lovely everything looks at this time of year. Bring in the landscapers and maid brigade to get the ball rolling. Is it time to replace some of those old furnishings whose bloom has faded? The answer is yes, even if you believe you can't afford it. Inspiration is priceless wherever you may find it.
For those born under the aforesaid constellation of Gemini, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Venus will be transiting the top of your chart that represents your vocation or professional life. So much of work is obviously valued around how much we do, not who we are. April is the month to change that perception. People naturally make first impressions on how we look and dress, but we all know clothes and faux beauty are only skin deep. Everyone wants to connect with natural beauty for its ability to inspire, and when we are inspired, we do our best work. Think creatively how you can sway people in the workplace so they can start to remember you as a person of inspiration. In this way you will increasingly become known and liked more for who you are, than for what you do. Yes, success in work is based upon what we know, but it is also based on who we know and how well we are connected. How do you want to be known at work? This is the month to change that image if you are not satisfied.
In the middle of April, Mars will stop in the heavens in his constellation of Scorpio turning retrograde on the 17th of the month. This is the year of Mars' perigee, the time when he comes close to the earth. Planets enter their retrograde cycle when they are opposite the Sun, meaning they are at their closest approach to the Earth, and thus very powerful. Mars represents our desire nature and self-determinism, and he will be growing stronger during this period of time. Unfortunately for Mars, the planet Saturn is already in Scorpio and will hold Mars' self-determinism in check at this time. This can be an interval of time where you feel you are developing the discipline of patience. Otherwise, you risk losing it and letting frustration get the better of you. The choice on how you handle this frustrating Mars transit is really up to you.
If you were born under the fixed constellations of Taurus May 15th - June 15th, or Scorpio November 16th - December 15th, as well as Leo August 17th - September 16th or Aquarius February 13th - March 13th, this Mars station with Saturn portends a difficult time. Delays and postponements are likely in achieving your heart's desires. In addition, our fixed friends also have the storm planets, Rahu and Ketu, in the fixed constellations of Leo and Aquarius. These four difficult planets will present stop-and-go frustrations for these natives — the proverbial roller coaster of continuing ups and downs — for the next several months.
For those born under the aforesaid constellation of Taurus, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars retrograde in Scorpio can present persistent problems in your relationships and partnerships. These can be resolved, but it will take time and effort to work through these matters. Arguments cannot be avoided, so take the approach of de-escalation rather than confrontation. Address issues calmly and persistently and do not let concerns fester into resentment. In the end you will be known, if not loved and respected, for your patience rather than your recalcitrance.
If you were born under the aforesaid constellation of Scorpio, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars retrograde in your constellation can be experienced as frustration in not reaching your personal goals in a timely manner. This does not mean you need to work faster, or harder. Consider reviewing your goals and setting a more reasonable timeline to meet them. Slow and steady gives lasting results. There is no virtue in speed during this time. Remember, hard work never hurts any of the people you are working hard for. Take some time off. You are probably exhausted.
For those of you born under the aforesaid constellation of Leo, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars will retrograde in the part of your chart that is associated with home and family. This period can escalate domestic conflicts within the family, given the competing requirements of so many people in light of your own needs. Be a good householder these next couple of months. It is better to solve problems at the lowest possible level rather than letting them escalate. If you do so, your family members may sponsor you for sainthood, but only after the Mars transit is over. Perhaps home appliances and conveyances are not appearing better for wear, but before replacing them, make doubly sure you've done your due diligence. Again, there is no virtue in speed in addressing these important decisions.
If you were born under the aforesaid constellation of Aquarius, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars will retrograde in the part of your chart that is associated with your work or vocation. Mars' relationship with Saturn can slow down the perception of progress so important to maintaining your working morale. During this time it is better to take the long view and maintain a healthy morale. Do not let feelings of despondency set in. The on-demand philosophy of instant gratification, along with those people that subscribe to it, will need to take a back seat during this time. If you gratify them instantly today, you will be enslaved to it again tomorrow. Hurry up and ethically slow down the gratification process! If the people of instant gratification do not like it, they will go elsewhere, relieving you of that burden. With Mars at perigee, follow the adage: When the going gets tough-the tough go on a mini vacation.
Mercury will turn retrograde on the 28th of the April in the constellation of Aries, and will remain therein all through May until the 7th of June. Mercury usually spends a little over two weeks in a constellation, as the winged messenger is the fastest of the planets, excepting the Moon. Mercury represents our capacity for judgement in an ever-changing world. What seemed like a good idea yesterday may not be such a good idea today, for things or circumstance have changed.
The important point to remember when Mercury retrogrades is that his transit of a particular constellation increases from a little over two weeks to a little over two months. This will bring increased reflection and review in our judgments and decisions, particularly concerning the domains of life that Mercury influences. Secondly, as the Mercury retrograde period reflects this depth of our judgment, important decisions are to be avoided only when he is stopping in the heavens. These stopping points are called his stations, and I personally avoid the days before and after the stations for important decisions. Mercury will station retrograde on April 28th and station forward on May 22nd, both in the constellation of Aries. It is important to realize that the whole Mercury retrograde period is not to be shunned. Only during the stations, as new information is being received, which will indeed be reflected in your judgments. Mercury retrogrades three times a year and spends approximately two months in the constellation in which he retrogrades. Avoiding important decisions for half of any given year would be the theater of the absurd!
Furthermore, for the month of April to early June, Mercury in Aries will be under the aspect of Jupiter from the constellation of Leo. Jupiter's aspect on Mercury will put him in a more philosophical mood, drawing his attention toward the higher planes of existence such as philosophy, law and spirituality. Venus will be with Mercury in Aries from late April until the 18th of May, which also favors interest in the fine arts and spiritual matters.
If you were born under the fire constellations of Aries April 14th - May 14th, and Leo August 17th - September 16th, as well as Sagittarius December 16th - January 13th, Mercury's prolonged transit in Aries holds special meaning for all of you.
For those born under the aforesaid constellation of Aries, or have their Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mercury's transit has the potential to engage you in greater self-inquiry and self-analysis. You may choose to embrace some traditional or nontraditional paradigm of introspection, but more likely you may seek the wise council of Jupiter professionals for a couple months of self-assessment. A fresh approach is merited here.
If you were born under the fire constellation of Sagittarius, or have your Vedic Moon or rising constellation therein, Mercury'’s transit will influence your creativity and your children. Perhaps you have hit a bit of rut. This transit is an opportune time to plan a great adventure to get your creative juices flowing again. Once you take a break from your scripted life, however brief, you will come back refreshed with a new perspective. If you are a student or a parent, matters of education and schooling will concern you. Do you feel you or your children are receiving a quality education in the right educational environment? Now is the time to access this. Don't be blinded by the platitude to be true to your school. Be true to your education, wherever that may take you in your search for greater understanding.
For those born under the fire constellation of Leo, or have their Vedic Moon or rising constellation therein, Mercury's transit will be influencing the part of your chart that is associated with travel and educational advancement, and your relationship with divinity. Are you feeling educationally and spiritually inspired these days? This may be the time to travel to a new place, rather than the same old haunts for your vacation. Perhaps you are overdue to take an inspiring class. If your old spiritual Sangha is getting a little scripted, now is the time reach out and attend a new church, temple or spiritual service. The change has the potential to refresh you.
Jupiter will retrograde in the constellation of Leo on May 9th. He will remain in close approximation with the storm planet Rahu, also currently in Leo. As previously explained in the past Star Trends column, the effect of this planetary combination creates a tendency toward excess and exaggeration — "the sky's the limit" philosophy followed by a sudden collapse. Thus, you will continue seeing yet bigger business mergers, fueling concerns of monopolization of which I have spoken previously. Thankfully, one of the more positive effects of Saturn in Scorpio is that he will shine his aspect on Jupiter and Rahu, hopefully holding this excessive tendency in check. Globally the US dollar remains strong. Many troubled foreign economies are investing in US properties and businesses. These conditions, in my opinion, suggest another potential bubble followed by a collapse sometime in the future. It is best to be cautious in all your large ticket purchases. Saturn's call to moderation now can save you problems later down the road.
The two malefic planets, Mars and Saturn, both in the water constellation of Scorpio, signify continuing long term problems with water. These issues punctuate our daily news releases, from the prolonged drought in Southern California to the lead tainted drinking water in Flint, Michigan, as well as growing global concerns. The news reporting regarding water continues to break bad almost weekly. China has begun to build military installations along the contested islands of the South China Sea, suggestive of a growing conflict. Global warming continues to rear its head with increasingly extreme weather alarms almost weekly. The only good news is that the increasing bad news is receiving front page headlines, keeping these issues in play in the public forum. Expect to hear more about water issues until Scorpio is free of both Mars and Saturn.
For those of you born under the water constellations of Cancer July 16th - August 16th, and aforesaid Scorpio November 16th - December 15th, as well as Pisces March 14th - April 13th, the transit of Mars and Saturn in Scorpio holds special meaning for you.
If you were born under the water constellation of Cancer, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars and Saturn will be transiting the part of your chart that is associated with your creativity and children. This can be a time when you feel creatively stunted. If you are a parent, you may feel your children are working too hard and not getting the recognition they deserve. I recommend a family vacation or outing to get everyone out of the Mars/Saturn rut. There is more to life. See it for yourselves.
For those of you who were born under the water constellation of Pisces, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars and Saturn will be transiting the part of your chart that is associated with travel, education and your spiritual life. Pleaser know that this is not necessarily the best time to travel as Mars and Saturn have a tendency to create delays, so it is best to have a contingency plan. Educational life can be laborious, so try to take at least one fun class to get your mind out of the daily grind. The contemplative spiritual life, not the social, will speak to you during this time. If you were born under the water constellation of Scorpio, please read the earlier forecast in this column.
June 2016 opens with Venus in the constellation of Taurus with Mercury joining Venus shortly from the 7th to the 12th. Then Venus enters Gemini and exchanges constellations with Mercury in Taurus almost until months' end. Celebrate the month of June and the Summer Solstice with respected friends and loved ones during the reign of Mercury and Venus, but have a rain check ticket ready as Saturn will be opposite this planetary alignment with the usual delays.
Mars will retrograde back into the constellation of Libra on the 17th of June, becoming free of Saturn's influence. He will only be in this placement until the middle of July, so now is the time to get your projects into gear. You will have approximately one month to move full steam ahead.
For those of you born under the moveable constellation of Libra October 17th - November 15th or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars will be transiting the part of the chart that is associated with Mars will light a spark that has been missing since his alignment with Saturn in February of this year. Projects that have been delayed will move forward during this time. It is a good time to start a new health regimen or exercise program so you can feel the burn again.
If you were born under the moveable constellation of Aries April 14th - May 14th, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars will be transiting the part of your chart that has to do with your relationships and partnerships. Since Mars is in Venus' constellation of Libra, it is time to make love, not war. This can be a romantic delight in personal relationship and a progressive time in business partnership. It is time to get re-inspired after Saturn's stinting effect these last couple of months.
For those of you born under the moveable constellation of Cancer July 16th - August 16th, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars will be transiting the foundational part of the chart. If you have been working too hard and miss your home and family, Mars can provide that necessary spark with them, which is the reason you do all those things for those you love. Take the time to spend the time with all of your extended family to reaffirm your place in the world.
If you were born under the moveable constellation of Capricorn January 14th - February 12th, or have your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, Mars will be transiting the very top of your chart related to profession. This is your month to get your professional ball rolling from the previous delays you have experienced, and this can be a very effective time in your chosen profession, if you steward your time properly. Remember, this transit only lasts about a month, and by July 12th Mars will be stuck again with Saturn in Scorpio to the end of September of 2016.
In the middle of June, Jupiter and Rahu will align again within a degree of one another in the constellation of Leo lasting until the end of the month. Rahu, being a storm planet, has the potential to destabilize, or eclipse planets he comes in close proximity to. The last time he came this close to Jupiter was in January and early February of this year. Jupiter's natural sense of optimism was eclipsed by this storm pattern, and the global economy experienced several weeks of financial volatility. This pattern will return again by mid-June, so be prepared for another round of economic volatility.
Lastly, the planet Jupiter represents our spiritual and philosophical value system, the credo by which we live. When Jupiter becomes associated with the storm planet Rahu, this combination has a tendency to create spiritual and religious extremism. Current events make us increasingly aware that religious and spiritual zealots have no problem killing innocents in the name of God to further their distorted beliefs. Fanatics of any persuasion by definition cannot be dissuaded by reason so they must be dissuaded by righteous force. If you meet such fanatical people during this time, don't waste your time arguing — just walk on by. It is better to be safe than sorry when dealing with those under the influence of Jupiter and Rahu's extremism.
The Summer Solstice of 2016 will take place on June 20th, which is a full Moon in the constellation of Sagittarius opposite Venus in the constellation of Gemini. This is the longest day of the year north of the equator. Whatever constellation you were born under, plan for some festive celebration. This day has the longest duration of light in the whole year. Do not forsake this opportunity to remember and be grateful for all that has grown and come to maturity in the proverbial gardens of your lives. Especially with Venus in full aspect to the Moon. Hold all those you have been privileged to love very, very close on this most special of days.
I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year for 2016! As we open 2016, the Star Wars movie The Force Awakens is breaking box office records surging with over 1 billion dollars in sales and climbing. The popularity of this series, which started in the late 70's, should not surprise us. The themes of the Star Wars franchise are really archetypal and as old as time itself.
The creation myths of all cultures have one thing in common — they describe in great detail the eternal struggle between the forces of light and darkness, and the eventual triumph of humanity in this process. Although the names of the gods and demons, the heroes and villains, and the forces of light and dark are many and varied — their journey is essentially the same.
That journey is the one from Light into Darkness, and Darkness into Light describing the cyclic journey of time that all cultures embrace in their calendrical measurements of existence. We see this cycle in the light/dark which marks the period of time called a day. We see this cycle in the light/dark period of time from new to full moon we call a month. Again we see this journey in the light/dark cycle of the period of time we call a year, and lastly in the light and dark earthly period of time called the summer/winter of our lives. This cycle is eternal. All cultures throughout history measure time in their calendars by this absolute yardstick of existence.
Like most ancient cultures the Indian calendar divides the year into two — the bright part of the year in which light is increasing, and the dark part of the year in which light is decreasing. The bright part of the year starts on the Winter Solstice, as this day represents the darkest day north of the equator. From this day forward the light increasingly returns as the Sun begins his northerly course of illumination.
Thus in all cultures the Winter Solstice is joyously celebrated with festivals of lights. It is time for the force of darkness to withdraw as the force of light has awakened and where the shadows fall into full retreat. So yes, the timing of the return of the Star Wars franchise with The Force Awakens has been perfectly timed to begin with the calendrical awakening of the return of the light at the Winter Solstice. No wonder it broke all box office records! You can be sure there will be more Star War installments to follow, for the light which has been awakened this solstice will not reach its calendrical zenith for some time to come.
January of 2016 opens with several celestial events. Firstly, Mercury will retrograde on January 5th until the 25th of the month. He will turn retrograde in Capricorn under the watchful eye of the planet Saturn, which rules the constellation. The planetary combination brings a measured caution to our deliberations and decisions. As I have said in previous columns, when the planet of judgement/discernment retrogrades, it offers a period of time when we receive new information that may render previous decisions we have made defunct. The whole retrograde period is not to be avoided for important decisions, only the days — and the days on either side of those days when Mercury stops in the heavens, for the winged messenger does not like to stop in his tracks. Those days are 5th and 25th of January. Let Saturn's influence on Mercury bring seriousness to your New Year resolutions.
On January 8th the Nodes of the Moon, Rahu and Ketu leave the constellations of Virgo and Pisces and move into the constellations of Leo and Aquarius. The Latin word "Node" translates to "a knot of complications" — and the planets Rahu and Ketu are responsible for the complications the eclipses create. Eclipses occur in pairs twice a year, and in 2016 they will occur in the months of March and September.
Rahu will remain in the constellation of Leo, and Ketu will remain in the constellation of Aquarius for about year and half, as that is their periodicity of their time. They are considered shadow and storm planets in Vedic astrology and they will bring a growing sense that the times are changing to those natives who were born under the aforesaid constellations. If you were born under the constellation of Leo August 17th to September 16th, or were born with Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, and if you were born under the constellation of Aquarius February 13th to March 13th, or were born with your Vedic Moon or rising sign therein, the Nodes are the harbingers of change for you. So be open to new ideas and new opportunities, for the rules of life will change in 2016 for those born under these constellations. The well-traveled road will not lead you to your desired outcome.
The constellations of Leo/Aquarius are fixed constellations, known for their tenacity and self-determinism no matter the celestial weather. Leos can be more status quo in their determinism than Aquarians, but Aquarians can be just as determined in their non-status quo approach! Change is not easy for fixed constellations. Yet all signs must face change and adapt to fluid circumstances at some point in time to truly become successful. As said, Rahu in Leo, and Ketu in Aquarius are the shadow and storm planets that upset the proverbial apple cart. They are likened to dragons and serpents in both western and eastern astrology — not because they are sinister, but rather because they are circuitous, representing non-linear trajectories to arrive at their destination. Thus, from a status quo point of view, they represent non-traditional mavericks capable of upsetting the traditional ways things are done.
Rahu and Ketu give their best results when they are associated with the natural benefic planets of light, particularly the planet Jupiter. This will be the case as we enter 2016, for Jupiter has already been in the constellation of Leo since late July of 2015, where he will remain in aspect with Rahu and Ketu well into 2016. Jupiter’s glance upon Rahu and Ketu will give enough light to drive back the storms and shadows to chart a new non-traditional trajectory to future successes to all of those who were born under the fixed constellations of Leo and Aquarius, as well as Taurus May 15th to June 15th and Scorpio November 16th to December 15th, including those who were born with their Vedic Moons and risings signs therein.
However, Jupiter's association with Rahu in Leo has a dark side that is important to remember. Jupiter's strong expansive nature urges all of us to embrace growth according to where he placed by transit. Rahu is also an expansive planet, but more strictly in the worldly or material realms, rather than in Jupiter's spiritual sense. There is a tendency to overreach in our material and worldly ambitions when these planets align. They represent the all too familiar "to big to fail" mentality where "endlessly more" seems to be the driver of the times. The tendency-to-more has already led to record mega-mergers and acquisitions, and this tendency will continue in the first half of 2016 to be sure. It will be very easy and almost seem natural to overreach during the Jupiter/Rahu transit in the areas of life affected.
Saturn's aspect from Scorpio on the Jupiter/Rahu combination in Leo should act as a moderate counter balance to this tendency to overreach our grasp, provided we choose to reflect rather than act from hubris. For those born under the aforesaid fixed constellations of Leo, Taurus, Scorpio and Aquarius it would be wise to be prudent and not follow the maxim that more must inevitably be better. In the areas of your successes be careful not to overreach, for the results you seek may not follow the previous trajectories of your efforts. For example, although the real estate markets in many popular urban areas are once again escalating at a record pace, you will be wise to be cautious. Do not get caught up in the escalating frenzy and be tempted to pay more than you really can afford because you believe the markets will yet go higher — sound familiar?
Another point of reference is the price of oil. As mentioned in previous Star Trends, the last time Saturn transited the constellation of Scorpio was some thirty years ago from late 1984 to 1987. Global oil collapsed during that period of Saturn's transit in Scorpio. Saturn again entered Scorpio in November 2014 and will remain therein for another year and half. All those who speculated and doubled down on oil in the mistaken belief that there would be swift return to escalating prices were financially disappointed, or worse devastated. It is a hard lesson to fathom regarding boom/bust economic cycles, where yesterday's treasured commodity is today's road to financial ruin. Regardless of your sign, be careful not to let your excesses get the better of you during the Jupiter/Rahu transit of Leo. With that advice heeded this can be a rather progressive period of time.
For those of you born under the constellations of the Aries April 14th to May 14th, Leo, and Sagittarius December 16th to January 13th and for those who have their Vedic Moons and rising signs therein, it is time to refresh and reinvigorate your sense of self-worth. The limits of your consciousness determine the limits of your worth in the world. It is time to take a new trajectory in consciousness at your favorite avant-garde educational institute to further facilitate the opening of your mind.
If you were born under the constellations of Taurus, as well as Virgo September 17th to October 16th and Capricorn January 14th to February 12th, and for those of you have who have your Vedic Moons and rising signs therein, you may feel a sense of fatigue and world weariness. Perhaps you have been too much in the world and are in need of momentary break from it. If you are of that age — a sabbatical may be in order, or perhaps a timely time-out, or vacation to a new and exotic place of retreat. It is time to regenerate, so take the time to examine new modalities of healthy repose to recoup your enthusiasm and well-being. Don't worry — be happy, the world will still be there when you return refreshed.
For those born under the constellations of Gemini June 15th to July 15th, Libra October 17th to November 15th, and Aquarius and for those who have their Vedic Moons and rising signs therein, the positive side of the Jupiter/Rahu alignment will activate your social life and expand your circle of friends and potential romantic relationships. It is high time to expand your social circle through an innovative and progressive approach in meeting new people. Your old patterns are stale and predictable. You need some new life breathed into them!
Lastly, for those born under the constellations of Cancer July 16th to August 16th, Scorpio, and Pisces March 14th to April 13th and those who have their Vedic Moons and rising signs therein, it is time to take a new direction in your work and worldly successes. The road that led you to where you are today may be so well traveled it has become a sunken rut. Consider whether it is time for a new approach and new direction on a new road that shows off your creative talent. Someone has to be the new path finder and it might as well be you!
February 2016 opens and closes with Mercury and Venus in alignment in the constellation of Sagittarius under the aspect of Jupiter for the first part of the month. Later both align in the constellation of Capricorn from the 12th onward. This will be a good time for communication and important decisions regarding travel, business and educational plans since Mercury stays closely aligned with bright and benefic Venus all month. Venus and Mars exchange constellations up until to the 12th heralding romantic chemistry well before Valentine’s Day.
Later in the month on February 20th Mars leave the constellation of Libra and enters his own constellation of Scorpio where he will remain strong for several months. 2016 is the year he comes to perigee, which is his close approach to the earth. As previously said Saturn is already in Scorpio and will continue to be so placed for another year and half. This planetary combination presents a particular challenge for those born under the influence of Mars due to his strength during this period of time.
If you were born under the constellation of Aries April 14th to May 14th, or Scorpio November 16th to December 15th, or have your Vedic Moons or rising signs therein you will definitely feel the heat of Mars and the ensuing friction of coming up against the cold, hard, intractable Saturn. This combination is very frustrating. I have often said: Mars wants what he wants, preferably yesterday — and Saturn inevitably delivers tomorrow. Martians will experience the strength of their desires and passions during his transit of Scorpio these next several months, only to be continually delayed in reaching their objectives. What a wonderful time to develop the virtue of patience, for that is what will serve all Martians during this frustrating time. Long range plans, with contingencies will help you stay the course and relieve your growing frustration. Don't forget to exercise to help mellow you out!
In the astrology of all cultures, the planets that reflect the spectrum of white light from the Sun in the night sky are considered to be the best benefic planets, as they awaken the force of light which creates perceptual growth, the foundation of insight. These planets are Jupiter and Venus, and they represent the educated or spiritual class of humanity. The planets that reflect the spectrum of white light dimly are considered malefic by nature. They represent shadow and darkness, which represents the distorted or ignorant class of humanity.
Sadly, it is common knowledge to us all that there are those people in the political class and arena, who wish to lead us down a dimly lit distorted path based upon their dimly lit intellectual vantage point. This sad fact is not just limited to the political class. You will also find these people in business and other leadership positions in all walks of life. Their stalwart motto often is "my way or the highway" — the result of self-absorption, for such is the effect of not possessing a very bright light.
Starting in late February the naturally malefic planets, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu will all be exclusively transiting the fixed constellations of Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius. For those of you who were born under these aforesaid fixed constellations, this can present a problematic period of time. You will probably see more of these dimly lit individuals in the foundational areas of your lives than usual circumstances warrant! Such are the fates for our fixed friends.
The naturally malefic planets transiting the foundational areas of your lives can and will present unforeseen challenges, obstructions, and increasing delays in your affairs. You must be on guard not to give in to potentially ill-planned reactive and retaliatory responses to such frustrating circumstances represented by those in the dim bulb class. The strength of all the fixed constellations is their tenacity, stamina and durability in the face of adversity and thus their ability to stay the course. Yes, those of you who come under the sway of the fixed constellations can indeed stay the course you have charted, but when you are confronted with the ignorant class of humanity delaying and obstructing the progress you desire, tenaciously seek the council of that benefic class of humanity represented by Jupiter and Venus — the principal planets of light. Light transforms everything that happens in the shadows and darkness due to its catalytic effect. Einstein said it best: "No problem is solved on the same level of consciousness that created it". 2016 is a Leap Year and February is leap month as it has 29 days, so celebrate it by leaping into the light with those already there when making all your important decisions. You have an extra day to do so!
March features two eclipses, on the 8th and 23rd of the month. Mercury will be caught up in the eclipse patterns for the whole month of March so expect this to be a time of increasing change, regarding perceived volatility in the weather, business and the economy in general as the first quarter of 2016 comes to an end.
The eclipse of March 8th is a total solar eclipse that occurs at 24 degrees of the constellation of Aquarius. If you view the eclipses as a storm pattern, then we simply realize we tend to make crisis decisions when besieged by storm. The nature of a solar eclipse is to momentarily block the light. Of course we do not make our best decisions when the light is totally blocked during a total solar eclipse since we are in complete darkness. This total eclipse will have such an illuminative torch, as represented by the planet Jupiter who will shine his light on the eclipse point from the opposite point of the constellation of Leo. Jupiter's almost exact aspect on the eclipse point will provide illumination during this challenging month which can totally alter for the better your perception of whatever challenging reality you appear to be facing. Decisions do not have to be made in crises — they can be made in the light.
For those born under the aforesaid fixed constellations this eclipse can herald a change and new direction in the part of the chart where the eclipse takes place. For those born under the constellation of Taurus May 15th to June 15th, and for those who were born with their Vedic Moons or rising signs therein, the eclipse point engages the vocational part of the chart. Changes in work and business should be examined and reviewed by professionals whose opinions you respect for your work may take a new trajectory. For those born under the constellation of Leo August 17th to September 16th, and those who have their Vedic Moons or rising sign therein, the eclipse takes place in the part of your chart related to your close personal relationships, marriage and partnerships. It might be time to embrace a skilled therapist to guide you in the face of the challenges you perceive during this turbulent month. For those born under the constellation of Scorpio November 16th to December 15th, and those who have their Vedic Moon and rising sign therein, the eclipse takes place in the part of the chart related to your domesticity, home and family. Perhaps you are overwhelmed and in need of assistance in your domestic matters, or at the very least hiring a house cleaning service to clear out the clutter. Mars and Saturn together in Scorpio may have you on the verge of exhaustion. You cannot and should not do it all. Help is there for you — embrace it. Lastly, for those born under the fixed constellation of Aquarius February 13th to March 13th and those who have their Vedic Moon or rising signs therein, this eclipse is in the part of the chart associated with You. Like Scorpio, you may feel exhausted with no perceived let up in sight. Take the time this month for you — yes you, to get out of the rat race and experience the lightness of friends and good company.
The closing eclipse of March is the final lunar eclipse in the constellation of Virgo on March 23rd representing a pattern that goes back to fall of 2014. This is a partial lunar eclipse and takes place at 9 degrees of the constellation of Virgo. For those born under the constellations of Virgo September 17th to October 16th and Pisces March 14th to April 13th, and those who have their Vedic Moons and rising signs therein this eclipse falls across the horizontal axis of your charts and can momentarily distort your life perspective. Mercury will also be caught up in the eclipse pattern and you would have to be a lunatic to make life changing important decisions under these influences. This eclipse falls in the middle of the week so take a long lunch, or a day off, to do something absolutely non consequential so the perceived burdens of this time fade into distant memory. You don't have to be on twenty-four-seven for God's sake.
The month of March 2016 ends with Jupiter's bright aspect to the Moon, so if you have done your homework with wise counsel and friends, this month can end on an upswing, for indeed all's well that indeed ends well.
