Mercury in Jyotish

Here Comes the Judge

Mercury is the planet that is closest to the Sun completing his orbit in a mere 88 days. Next to the Moon he is the speediest of the grahas transiting a sign in a mere three weeks. He therefore represents that which changes and grows rapidly, the very essence of youth. He is associated the daily flux of information, short term plans, journey and projects, and the three month business cycle. To better understand Mercury, and judge his effects, it is essential that you understand how quickly he changes constellations and relationships with the other planets so quickly he can confound even the best of minds in the decision-making process! What appears to have value one moment is completely devoid of value the next.

In Vedic astrology Mercury is known as Buddha, and he represents the conscious process of discernment or what we call judgment. To do that he collects and crunches data, and we now live during the most data driven times in history! In order to comprehend the fast moving youthful prince we must pause for a longer look, and the longest look we have available is during his retrograde cycle when he makes his inferior conjunction with the Sun, as he will spend up to two months in given sign. During that time he will slow down in his closet approach to the earth and we have the opportunity to view him up close and personal to assist us in gathering data to discern difference between that which is ephemeral and that which is of lasting value.

Rahu and America's Date with Destiny

"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens" from Ecclesiastes is apropos for these times as America has entered into a new season of time — the planetary cycle of Rahu. Rahu is a planet of storm and rebellion, and it will come as no surprise that the United States was born on July 4th, 1776, in the cycle of Rahu. America has again entered the cycle of Rahu in the last year and elected Donald Trump as President on a revolutionary platform within his own party while he was running the cycle of Rahu!

Cycles, or seasons of time, are found in all almanacs and calendars that measure quality and duration of time. Vedic astrology utilizes a system of planetary cycles, or seasons that repeat themselves every 120 years. Another historical almanac is explored in "The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy" by authors William Strauss and Neil Howe. Their historical seasons run from 80 to 100 years and their almanac forecasted that the United States would enter a fourth turning; a storm cycle of winter some 20 years after the work was published in 1997. Their timing is synchronistic with Vedic astrology's timing of Rahu's current storm cycle. So, if we wish to forecast the fruit of a particular season, we need to look back on the historical record of that past season for as Mark Twain proclaimed, "History never repeats itself, but often in rhymes." Join Dennis as he forecasts Rahu's cycle and America's date with destiny.

Dharma and Right Vocation and Your Life's Purpose

Each person has a rightful path in pursuit of the realization of the self. This rightful path of personal purpose is called swadharma in Sanskrit. To discover this the ancient Vedas of India say to consult a Vedic astrologer. That ancient advice is as timely now as it was then, particularly in the light of these times of increasing vocational stress and confusion due to the globalization of the workforce. The social contract of work has changed in our times from the security and longevity of the local marketplace to the increased performance and productivity of a global marketplace model as documented by James Huntington's 2012 best seller Work's New Age. Huntington reveals that the end of full employment is already here and how the lack of work is already reflected in changing social patterns and a person's sense of self-worth and identity.

This class will teach you the vidya of vocation, from the ancient philosophical foundational principles of Dharma to the modern expression of that Dharma in today's Western workplace. Dennis will clearly explain the vocational indicators of each of the planets, the ashrams of vocational expression, and the classic astrological principles in the timing and fruition of career. Let Vedic astrology help you light the way and truly discover the real difference between work and right vocation during these challenging times. This class is for beginning and advanced students of Vedic astrology.

The Eastern Moon through Western Eyes

This workshop will present a comprehensive analysis of the Chandra, the Moon, and explain why this planet is considered the most important of the Grahas in Vedic astrology. Chandra represents the fertile ground of consciousness upon which the drama of life is perceived. It was the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who proclaimed: "Every person takes the limits of their vision as the limits of the world." Understanding the Moon's constellation, phase of fullness, aspects, Chandra Yogas, placement, as well as lunar mansion, or Nakshatra, is to truly walk a mile in another person's mind and perceive the potential of their destiny through their eyes. Further, this class will introduce the student to the foundational principles of Panchanga, the lunar calendar that is used to choose auspicious timing of events. This class is for both beginning to advanced students, as Chandra is such a foundational planet for chart interpretation. You would have to be a lunatic to miss this class.
